But this is the first fake GTI I’ve seen (well, noticed). Dude went all out, even got the right wheels. Problem is, he forgot the taillights and that the MkIV GTI was only a 2dr in the US.

Plot twist: It’s actually GTI swapped sleeper.

Wow, I don’t understand people who do this. Just invest your money in the car you want. I made a post about a Denali with V badges (as in CTS-V) on its rear and front fender and it just blows my mind how far people will go. Hell I’ve seen BMW’s with AMG badges and Mercs with M badges.

I once saw a kid with a Hyundai (the old shitty two door hatchback) with Merc badges all over it. He even gouged the Hyundai badge on the hood off and replaced it with an undersized Merc badge (I say gouged because the area around the badge was deformed). It was past the point of funny and actually made me feel a little sorry for him, until I saw him walking to it. Kid was about as pasty as they come and living “thug life” to the fullest.

While I don’t understand dong it, it’s not like it’s expensive to do. This isn’t an alternative to getting the car you want, it’s an appearance thing.

Interesting plot twist, it seems to have the proper rear valance. The valance on Mk4 2.slows didn’t have a cut out because the exhaust was tucked underneath and the pipes just curved downwards.

Fun fact: VW did sell some 4 door Mk4 Golfs with the 1.8T engine from the GTI, but they still had a Golf badge.

Yeah,I noticed that too, and he has little bitty baby twin tips on it. It’s pretty odd how much work they put into the really little details without addressing the gigantic, glaring ones. The non-smoked tails is the the one that really throws me, since that’s probably the most obvious identifier of the GTI aside from the badging.

It goes from being an appearance (cosmetic) thing to being a sad thing once you start adding the badges. By adding the badges you are 1) Trying to fool those around you 2) Fooling yourself and 3) Making a fool of yourself to anyone who knows about cars. Also anybody who isn’t into cars won’t know the difference between a Golf and a GTI so what are they trying to accomplish?

I once saw a 328i with an M3 front fender, it had the M3 vent on the side but the back was just a normal 328 with an M badge. What is the point of that? I’ve also seen this on a 528/535, an M5 front complete with vents but the back has 2 lonely exhausts.

Actually, come to think of it, it may have had the 3 spoke steering wheel as well. Can’t guarantee that though, I was too busy looking at the exterior.

Edit pertaining to the 1.8t: I was under the impression that that only happened after the 1.8 GTI got 180hp, and that they only put the 150hp 1.8 in the standard Golf. I could be totally wrong on that, though

I was considering taking off the “Mazda5" badging on the back of my car and replacing it with a genuine BMW M5 badge. I’m not trying to fool anyone into thinking that it’s something it’s not, just abbreviating. Mazda Mazda5? C’mon, that’s a tad redundant.

I’d argue, but mine has had 3 catastrophic failures in the past year, two of which were sudden brake failures, so what do I know

When I got rid of mine I ran away as quickly as possible. The Mazda dealership offered me $4500 trade in and I was afraid I’d have a warrant in my name for armed robbery.

That being said, if you are going to fake it, a MkIV is the way to go. There were very few cosmetic differences between the Golf and GTI, and I don’t think even most owners know about the 2 door thing.

On the other hand, if you’re doing something and the best possible outcome of that something is someone thinks you own a MkIV GTI, you should probably be doing something else.

Like the recent thread about the guy who modded his 328i with tons of M Performance parts, that’s totally fine. As he said after all the mods it was cheaper than a 335i, but he didn’t turn around and throw an M3 badge on the back even though almost half his car is M Performance parts now.

Yeah, that’s a pretty solid trade in right there. It’ll be a few years before I dump mine, but 24v pricing seems to be holding on relatively well so hopefully it’ll still be worth something when the time comes.

How do you know they haven’t built themselves a five-door MkIV GTI?

I owned an ‘04 VR6 for 160k miles, and consider it the best car I’ve ever owned. No window regulators, no electrical issues, just solid all around. I’d have kept it if it was a 5 door. Still going strong with a coworker, too. The 1.8T and automatics give the whole line a bad rap, but the 2.0s are almost impossible to kill, and the 24V VR is a great engine. So it the 12V, once you do the chain rails.

Yeah I actually owned all 3 gas engines over the years and had pretty much every high and low a Mk4 owner could have. I still wish I would have bought the low low mile unmolested R32 I came across when I had the chance.
